It’s almost nearly impossible to run the gambit of a 24-hour day without having a run-in with the text of chatGPT or a human conversation about chatGPT capabilities. As a professor in ethics, about a week ago, I had to take a moment to understand and learn some of the initial capabilities of chatGPT. So, I joined the millions of users swimming downstream, into the now subtle current of chatGPT.
If you have not opened a free account on openai.com, you should do so…immediately. ChapGPT is the future, and this new future has many technological benefits but it also has many landmines.
I asked chatGPT two simple questions: 1) how can chatGPT help humanity, and 2) how can chatGPT hurt humanity. Below the dotted line are the reponses I received from chatGPT. Now I end my own actual commentary. Thank-you.

How can chatGPT help humanity?
ChatGPT can help humanity in many ways, including:
Providing information and knowledge: ChatGPT has been trained on a diverse range of topics, so it can answer questions and provide information on various subjects.
Improving efficiency and productivity: ChatGPT can automate repetitive tasks, such as customer service, freeing up time and resources for more meaningful work.
Enhancing education and learning: ChatGPT can be used as a tutor or teaching assistant, helping students to learn and understand complex subjects.
Advancing research and development: ChatGPT can support research by generating hypotheses, conducting literature reviews, and summarizing data.
Improving accessibility: ChatGPT can make information and services more accessible to people with disabilities or limited access to technology.
Overall, ChatGPT has the potential to augment human capabilities and make many aspects of our lives easier, more efficient, and more fulfilling.
How can chatGPT hurt humanity?
ChatGPT, like any technology, can also have negative impacts on humanity if used irresponsibly or for malicious purposes. Some potential ways ChatGPT could hurt humanity include:
Spreading misinformation: ChatGPT has been trained on a large corpus of text, including some that may be incorrect or false. If used to generate information without proper verification, it could contribute to the spread of misinformation and disinformation.
Replacing human jobs: ChatGPT has the potential to automate many tasks that are currently performed by humans, leading to job losses and potentially exacerbating economic inequality.
Altering human behavior and decision-making: If people rely too heavily on ChatGPT or other AI systems for information and decision-making, they may lose critical thinking skills and become more susceptible to manipulation.
Privacy and security concerns: ChatGPT has access to a large amount of sensitive and personal information. If this information is not properly secured, it could lead to privacy violations and security breaches.
Ethical considerations: There are also broader ethical considerations around the development and deployment of AI systems, including questions about accountability, transparency, and bias.
It is important to be mindful of these potential negative impacts and to use ChatGPT and other AI technologies responsibly, with appropriate safeguards and regulations in place.
